Abstract:  Implementation science, or the study of methods to improve the adoption, implementation, and sustainment of evidence-based practices such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), is relevant from bench to bedside. This presentation will review the basic principles of implementation science, including definitions, methods, design, and outcomes. We will also delineate how the principles of implementation science can be applied to treatment development, outcome research, and routine practice, whether within or outside traditional mental health settings. We will conclude with a discussion on how implementation science can inform practical implementation efforts which endeavor to implement evidence-based practice in the service of improving patient, clinic, and system outcomes

This workshop is designed to help you:
• Learn basic principles of implementation science
• Apply the principles of implementation science to scientific efforts to develop, refine, disseminate and implement CBTs
• Apply the principles of implementation science to practical implementation efforts

About the Presenters:

Dr. Rinad Beidas is Assistant Professor of Psychology in Psychiatry and Director of Implementation Research at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine.  Her work focuses on the implementation of evidence-based practices for youth psychiatric disorders. Dr. Beidas is deeply committed to partnering with community stakeholders to understand how to implement evidence-based practices and improve children’s mental health services across a variety of settings including community mental health, pediatric primary care, and schools. Dr. Beidas has published approximately 70 articles and is the co-editor of the book Dissemination and implementation of evidence-based practices in child and adolescent mental health. 

Dr. Shannon Wiltsey Stirman is a Clinical Psychologist and Implementation Scientist in the Dissemination and Training Division of the National Center for PTSD, and an Assistant Professor at Stanford University’s Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. Her research focuses on training and consultation in evidence-based mental health interventions, the development of scalable and valid measures of fidelity and adaptation, and the identification of strategies to support the sustainability of evidence-based practices in service settings. Her research has been funded by the National Institute of Mental Health and the Canadian Institute for Health Research.
