Title:  Stuck Points in CBT Training in Community Mental Health

Abstract:

Given the preponderance of evidence supporting the efficacy of cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), there has been an increased emphasis on dissemination to community mental health systems (CMH).This webinar will focus on the challenges for implementation of CBT with community mental health clinicians with respect to support, assistance, and resources CMH clinicians need as they continue to build CBT competency. Common stuck points in training will be discussed. Several basic strategies identified by trainers to be commonly used during consultation (adherence to structure, behavioral rehearsals, practice sample review, and case consultation) will be reviewed.  Additionally, difficulties in implementing the most effective strategies including experiential learning, practice sample review, and case conceptualization will be discussed. Finally, the relation between implementation models that add case consultation and treatment adherence and intervention skill across CMH clinicians will be highlighted.

  1. Describe 3 challenges to CBT implementation in CMH
  2. Identify 4 basic strategies for CBT trainers in CMH
  3. Identify 3 advanced strategies for consultation with CMH clinicians  

About the Presenter:

Dr. Lynn McFarr is the Director and Founder of CBT California and the Director and Founder of the Cognitive Behavioral/Dialectical Behavior Therapy Clinic at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. She is also a Professor of Health Sciences in the Department of Psychiatry for UCLA’s David Geffen School of Medicine. Dr. McFarr is the Practice Lead for CBT and DBT for the LA County Department of Mental Health where she oversees a large scale implementations of Case Conceptualization based CBT and DBT to community mental Health clinicians.  

Dr. McFarr received her Ph.D. from New York University (NYU) in clinical psychology and trained as a cognitive behavioral therapist under Dr. Robert Leahy at the American Institute for Cognitive Therapy in New York City.  Dr. McFarr is an award winning trainer of psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers and psychiatric nurses in Cognitive Behavioral Therapies. She has twice been acknowledged as Teacher of the Year for the Department of Psychiatry at Harbor-UCLA and has also received Psychologist of the Year from the LA County Department of Mental Health. 

Dr. McFarr is a Beck Scholar and is on the executive board for The International Association for Cognitive Therapy (IACP). She founded the Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Society of Southern California as well as the listserv for the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies (ABCT). Dr. McFarr was the Senior Editor of Cognitive Therapy for eight years as well as Program Chair of the annual meeting of the International Society for the Improvement and Teaching of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (ISITDBT) for 2014-2015. She is an ABCT Fellow and President-Elect of the Academy of Cognitive Therapy.
